“Who's that coming there, one of your own or a stranger?”
The stranger shuddered with all his body.
“It would still be like one of your own,” he answered hesitantly after a while.
“But you wouldn't know it by the voice,” the old man thought darkly. “It would be familiar, but...”
“I don't think so,” said the newcomer, “I haven't heard it for a long time.” Now there was silence for a while in the pitch darkness.
Then the old man moved instead, so that the hinge creaked, and asked uncertainly, even a little anxiously, “Is it you, Indrek?”.

Director Ingomar Vihmar: “I think that when Tammsaare titled his work ”Truth and Justice", he didn't mean it too seriously, but there is a touch of irony in it. Tammasar's meaning was not in the sense of “truth and justice”, but in the sense of irony. He guessed that it is not truth and justice that man seeks and needs, but compassion and love. Chasing their own justice and seeking truth, the characters in the work fight against the earth, against God, against society, against themselves and against others, so that by the fifth part, everyone has lost the will to fight and there is nothing left to do but surrender. To forgive themselves and others. If, in fact, there are any ‘others’. If you give up the fight and make peace with yourself, you will make peace with those “others” and peace will come to the earth! In fact, the title of this story could be “Forgiveness and Surrender” or “Love and Compassion” or why not “Love and Death”, but then I will be ironic and title it “Truth and Justice” anyway, even though it is not really about truth or justice, but rather about life and love.Is it a modern story at all? Of course not, modern man does not fight! (That was irony.)"
