The Yellow Wallpaper
Estonian Drama Theatre
A gentleman leases an antiquated manor house for the summer in hopes of aiding his wife’s recovery.
„The Yellow Wallpaper“ stands as a foundational work in American women’s literature, offering a rich tapestry open to multifaceted analysis. On one hand, it unfolds as a gothic horror tale, resonating with echoes of Poe and Hitchcock; on the other, it emerges as a potent voice of early feminism, challenging the predominantly male-centric perspective on women. Here, the author endeavors to dismantle the notion that women must conform to male ideals, highlighting the tragic consequences of men’s failure to perceive women as equals. A third reading unveils an existential inquiry into the perils of relinquishing one’s truth to the dictates of others, and the ensuing self-destruction.
Moreover, „The Yellow Wallpaper“ serves as Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s semi-autobiographical narrative, reflecting her own struggle with depression during an era when such afflictions were often met with inhumane treatment, particularly in the 19th century. Thus, it portrays the unsettling reality where even a well-meaning yet ignorant love, when wielded by a husband who doubles as the patient’s doctor, may inadvertently exacerbate the beloved’s descent into madness.
