There is no shortage of reasons why young people don’t go to the theater*. But what about the reasons why young people don’t write theater criticism?

Although theater criticism is predominantly dominated by the voices of experienced writers, there are also younger cultural critics active in the theater scene. How does one become a critic: does it require an unwavering interest in theater, specialized education, a thick skin, long-term experience, or is a passion alone enough?

Why publish theater criticism, what are the challenges of writing criticism, and where should the next generation of young theater critics begin — we’ll discuss all of this in a discussion featuring Estonia’s younger generation of cultural critics: Ilo Tuule Rajand, Johanna Rannik, and Emel-Elizabeth Tuulik. The discussion will be moderated by Leelo Mikk, a theater studies student at the University of Tartu.

The event is organized by Tartu Ülikooli Teatriteaduse Üliõpilaste Loož (TÜL) and it will be held in Estonian.
